Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile, and the centre of its largest conurbation (Greater Santiago). It is located in the country's central valley, at an elevation of 520 m (1,706.04 ft) above mean sea level. Although Santiago is the capital, legislative bodies meet in the coastal town of Valparaíso, a two-hour drive to its west.

Santiago de Chile was founded in 1541 and is the oldest city in the country. The location of the Chilean capital is quite spectacular: the snow-capped mountains of the Andes provide the backdrop for the city.
