Caracas, capital of Venezuela, surrounded by green hills, is a place of extreme contrasts - extreme wealth and desperate poverty. Capitolio Nacional occupies a huge area with golden domes. It is most famous for Salon Eliptico - an oval hall with a mural covered dome. The surrounding halls are decorated with battle scenes to represent Venezuela's fight for Independence.

El Avila is a very important mountain to the people of Caracas. It is a National Park and many locals take walks up there every day for the fresh air and wonderful views.

An interesting day trip from Caracas would be to Colonia Tovar, a town founded by the Germans with distinctive German features.
